Renewable energy companies in India are throwing solar panels and wind turbines at the problem at record speed, which sounds great on paper but then the sun eventually sets, the wind completely dies and everyone realises we have a big gap to fill. For the time being, big lithium-ion battery projects, what the energy industry calls BESS, are keeping things afloat. They are currently the quick fix handling the daily shifts in power supply. However, things are expected to change. Renewable energy companies in India are considering the potential of long-duration energy storage (LDES).
Why Lithium Works for Now
To figure out what the future of power grid holds next, we have to look at where BESS systems powered by lithium batteries actually excel at. They are lightning-fast. If a major power line goes down, these battery banks jump in in a matter of seconds so the lights don’t even flicker. For smoothing out the evening rush hour when everyone gets home and cranks up the AC, BESS is a perfect tool. It stops localised blackouts before they start.
The Major Wall We are Hitting
While BESS lasts for one to four hours, the requirements today are exponentially high. Imagine a brutal winter storm that lasts for a week. No sun for the panels, no wind for the blades. You simply cannot buy many lithium batteries to survive a week-long freeze. The math falls apart instantly. Not to forget, materials like cobalt and lithium cost way too much and trying to scale a standard battery farm to run an entire region for days would completely burn through any budget. Basically, it is a financial dead end.
The LDES Shift
That is the reason why top renewable energy companies in India are looking at LDES. This branch of technology is specifically engineered to hold and discharge its juice for several hours, days or even weeks at a time. Better yet, instead of competing for scarce, volatile metals, LDES relies on abundant, everyday materials. Some setups use old-school pumped hydro, relying on gravity and basic water reservoirs. Some have iron-air batteries that basically use the natural chemistry of rusting and un-rusting iron to store electricity. We are also seeing systems that compress air into liquid form or heat up giant arrays of crushed rock and molten salt. When the grid starves, that trapped heat spins a steam turbine.
BESS to LDES: A Natural Progression
BESS vs LDES isn’t a ‘winner-take-all’ battle. In fact, the two technologies actually complement each other down the line. BESS is doing the heavy lifting right now. It proves to sceptical utility companies and investors that large-scale storage is viable. That buys the engineering sector enough time to build out, test and reduce the price of LDES setups over the next decade.
The Big Picture
If the goal is achieving a power grid that runs reliably on clean energy without collapsing during a storm, we need something heavier than BESS. While lithium batteries get all the investment and press today, renewable energy companies in India think of LDES as a smart, tactical move. As we try to phase out fossil fuels completely, LDES could carry the burden of those long, multi-day weather lulls and possibly become the structural anchor that keeps the entire system grounded.
